Travelling alone

Travelling alone may not be an option for everyone. Some may be afraid of doing it, others may think it’s too dangerous or too boring. The reality is, it may just be a lot of fun and depending on your personality, it may just be the right thing for you. Sometimes, it is the circumstances that force you to do it. In my view, the most important thing is to be travel smart and be careful with your documents and money.

It’s an adventure

I think I have already told you my story, but the first time I have ever travelled outside Portugal, it was from Lisbon to Sydney and I have done it on my own. To add to it, I was petrified of planes and flying, so it was quite a feat.  Today, I think that was what made me love it so much and become the aviation lover I am now. There was always a bit of fear, I had never travelled before and everything was pretty much unknown to me at that point. But it was also a big adventure and part of it was conquering my fear of flying, which I did. Then, everything becomes easier. If you speak English fluently, you will be confident that you can communicate with ease, so all is left is enjoying your trip the best you can.

Be travel smart

But you must be travel smart, but I think that is the case for everyone, not just the ones travelling alone. First of all, be mindful of your hand luggage. Don’t take heavy bags with you, especially if you are on a long trip and you have long waiting times at international airports. The worst thing you can do is walk through airports with a heavy bag on your back. It spoils the whole experience for you.

Then you need to be very careful with your belongings. Usually, the main airports have lots of security, but you still have to be careful with your stuff. Have your travel documents in a safe place and your money in a place that is not visible or easy to access. These days, most people don’t even travel with money as they can use their credit cards and it’s much safer.

Enjoy your trip

Then, all you need to do is to enjoy your trip. Explore the places you visit, even if it’s just an airport, that is why travelling light is so important. You may meet heaps of interesting people on the way. I have lots of interesting stories from my travels. I have met so many interesting people and had amazing experiences. Some may think you may feel a bit lonely, well, again it all depends on your personality, but if you are a sociable person like me, I am sure you won’t feel lonely at all. I know I didn’t, even on my first trip.

The most important thing of all is that you follow your dreams and if you dream of travelling afar, don’t let the fact of not having company get in the way of fulfilling your dream. Dare to be adventurous and go, I’m sure you won’t regret it. I certainly didn’t.
